Experienced has since convinced me
of the expediency of carrying out the recommendation con-
tained in Colonial Office Despatch Ne. 137 of 18th. July
1890. I expressed my views fully on the subject in my letter
of 51st. January last, and I now learn with regret by your
No. 1155 of 7th. ultimo that Governor Sır G. W. Des Voeux
aia not see fit to acquaint the Secretary of State with
...y entire concurrence in the Colonial Office proposals.
I would add that the outies devolving on the Surveyor
General are more than can be permanently performed effici-
ently by a single official, and it is I think desirable
that an Assistant Surveyor General should be appointed,
who could relieve the Surveyor General of much of the rou-
tine work of the Department, and leave him sufficient time to carry out the more important and responsible auties
which devolve en him. Moreover it is I think further
desire -
able that in case of absence of the Surveyor General there should be an official who would in the natural course of
things perform his duties.

After much consideration I have to
recommend that a salary of $4800 per annum be included
in the Estimates of 1892 for an Assistant Surveyor General
I
propose to meet this expenditure as follows:-
